Tanah Lot’s history dates back to the 16th century when the revered Hindu priest Dang Hyang Nirartha recognized the offshore rock as a sacred site dedicated to the Sea Gods. Legend tells that he spiritually moved the massive rock into the ocean and created the sacred sea snakes as guardians of the temple. Over centuries, Tanah Lot became part of Bali’s chain of coastal sea temples that protect the island from negative forces. Despite erosion threatening its collapse in the 1980s, a major Indonesian–Japanese restoration saved the structure, allowing visitors today—often guided by SEMAT TRAVEL INDONESIA—to appreciate its spiritual depth.
