Sangeh Monkey Forest, also known as Alas Pala, is one of Bali’s most legendary and culturally rich forest sanctuaries. Located in the village of Sangeh, about 20 kilometers north of Denpasar, this forest has been a sacred site for centuries. The history of Sangeh Monkey Forest is deeply connected to Balinese Hindu mythology and traditional stories that shape the spiritual identity of the island. Local legends say that the towering nutmeg trees (Dipterocarpus trinervis), which dominate the forest, are not native to Bali. Instead, they are believed to have magically moved from Mount Agung—the island’s highest and most sacred mountain—toward the west. According to the story, the trees were supposed to reach Mengwi, but they stopped in Sangeh because they were discovered by villagers. Since then, the area has been considered holy and protected.
The forest is also home to Pura Bukit Sari, an ancient 17th-century temple built during the reign of the Mengwi Kingdom. This temple was established to honor the deities of the forest and maintain harmony between humans, nature, and the divine. The temple itself is surrounded by mythological statues, intricate stone carvings, and guardian figures that watch over the sanctuary. For centuries, rituals and ceremonies have been performed here, not only to worship but also to protect the monkeys, which are seen as sacred beings connected to the gods.
The long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) that inhabit the forest are believed to be guardians of the temple. Local priests and elders tell stories of how these monkeys have coexisted with the villagers for generations, bringing both challenges and blessings. In Balinese belief, animals in sacred spaces often symbolize protection and spiritual balance.
Today, Sangeh Monkey Forest is not only a cultural and spiritual destination but also a highlight in many Bali travel itineraries arranged by Semat Travel Indonesia, offering visitors a chance to explore Bali’s natural beauty and ancient traditions in harmony.
