Tirtagangga Park

Bali, Indonesia

Tirta Gangga is deeply intertwined with the royal lineage of Karangasem, one of the eight major kingdoms in Bali. The name itself, meaning “Water of the Ganges,” signifies the sacred reverence given to the site, connecting it spiritually to the holy river of India. Tirta Gangga was established in 1946 by the last Raja of Karangasem, Anak Agung Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem. He was not only a monarch but also an architect and a patron of the arts, personally overseeing the design and construction of the complex. This royal water garden served a dual purpose: as a place for the royal family’s bathing and recreation, and as a site for important religious ceremonies and purification rites (known as melukat).
