Tirta Empul Temple, also known as Pura Tirta Empul, is one of Bali’s most sacred water temples, located in Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia. The temple dates back to around 962 AD during the reign of the Warmadewa Dynasty. Its name literally means “holy water spring,” referring to the natural spring that still flows within the temple complex and is believed to have purifying power.
According to Balinese mythology, Tirta Empul is closely connected to the legend of God Indra and the demon king Mayadenawa. The holy spring is said to have been created by Indra to restore his poisoned soldiers to life. This sacred story forms the spiritual foundation of the temple and explains why Tirta Empul is deeply associated with purification, healing, and divine blessing.
Architecturally, the temple follows the traditional Tri Mandala layout, consisting of the outer courtyard (Jaba Sisi), the middle courtyard (Jaba Tengah), and the inner sanctum (Jeroan). The central courtyard is the heart of the temple, where visitors can see the famous purification pools with multiple holy water spouts used for the melukat ritual. These pools remain an active part of Balinese spiritual life to this day.
