Uluwatu Temple, also known as Pura Luhur Uluwatu, is one of the most sacred sea temples in South Bali, Indonesia, located on dramatic limestone cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean. According to local tradition, Uluwatu Temple was founded in the 11th century by the holy priest Mpu Kuturan and later developed in the 16th century by the revered sage Dang Hyang Nirartha. In Balinese belief, the temple is dedicated to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa in His manifestation as Rudra, the guardian of the southwest direction. The name “Uluwatu” comes from the words ulu (edge) and watu (rock), meaning “the rock at the edge of the land.”
Architecturally, Uluwatu Temple showcases classic Balinese design with stone shrines, split gates, and sacred courtyards set against dramatic coastal cliffs rising about 70 meters above the sea. The surrounding area is also home to long-tailed monkeys and the famous Kecak Fire Dance, which is performed daily at sunset in an open-air amphitheater near the temple.
Today, Uluwatu Temple remains an active place of worship and one of Bali’s most iconic cultural landmarks. Pilgrims come for prayer and purification, while travelers visit to enjoy the spiritual atmosphere, cultural performances, and spectacular ocean scenery.
